Cunningham joined Dunfermline as an 18-year-old, combining football with working in the pits.

Making his debut against Rangers in the North-East wartime league, he played just one full season before signing for Airdrie. A regular there for three seasons, Preston North End paid a sizeable fee to take him to Deepdale in 1949.

A strong-tackling defender, he made 487 appearances for Preston, winning promotion and reaching the 1954 Cup Final in a career that lasted until 1963. During his time with Preston, he was capped 8 times including captaining Scotland in the 1954 World Cup finals.
